Contrast the media treatment of Brand and Huw Edwards

Edwards was in the spotlight for ... how long? Three or four days? Then the story of how he paid a young girl for sexual images vanished and has never resurfaced, to my knowledge. Today it reared its head because the BBC mistakenly showed a clip of Edwards on Newswatch from several years ago before hastily cutting it off and apologising to viewers.

[Edwards is paid nearly half a million a year for reading the autocue, something you could teach a bright 10-year old to do]

One of today's reports says:

Speaking at a House of Lords communications committee in July, Davie said: “This has been a difficult affair where we have tried to calmly and reasonably navigate some difficult concerns around the allegations themselves, duty of care, privacy and legitimate public interest."

Take note of the wording: we have tried to calmly and reasonably navigate some difficult concerns around the allegations

All very calm and reasonable and responsible. And a reminder from the Director General that these are "allegations" don't forget, not accusations. It's now nearly 3 months since Edwards was suspended. The story has conveniently disappeared into the memory hole. Has the media pursued it and demanded some answers? Not that I have seen.

Can you imagine the DG saying of the Russell Brand story:
"This has been a difficult affair where we have tried to calmly and reasonably navigate some difficult concerns around the allegations themselves, duty of care, privacy and legitimate public interest."

No, me neither.

Andrew the nonce never got the Brand treatment either....the media never really went after him.

I heard, in passing, a couple of BBC programmes both were interviws with women who had been, allegedly, abused sexually by a more powerful male in the media, and it had been an unpleasant experience for them, understandably.

Why they felt it necessary, the hosts, to tangentally bring up Russell Brand's name, surprised me somewhat. I was like they were trying to link his actions, Brand's, with two other cases, as if it was a form of 'pattern' of male behaviour. 'Men like him ect.'

Shame Nick Cohen has been outed as a sex pest-his rant on Brand would have been insightful (sarc)

It's a great shame Nick Cohen has been outed as a sex pest (strange how the Guardian/Observer didn't notice his behaviour for years) because I'm sure one of his rants on Brand would have been illuminating and insightful (sarc).

I'd have paid for a Guardian to read that one...! nm

I'd quite forgotten about Nick Cohen. Thanks for the reminder, Sue.

There's another right-wing fruitcake under investigation for dubious practices -- chap called Dan Wootan, who had a show on GB News (it was suspended I believe) accused of offering cash to celebs for pictures of their genitalia. (Accused, mind you, not convicted, let's be fair [sarc])

Isn't it weird (maybe not) that most if not all of the men being outed for dubious sexual behaviour are off-the-spectrum right-wing nutjobs? Do the two conditions go together, one asks? And then there's Mandleson shopping with Jeffrey Epstein in some exotic location (Epstein's Lolita island?).

Nuff said.
