Guyana 1 Sackur 0 on environment

This jogged my memory. I recall there was a serious border dispute between Guyana and Venezuela end of last year:

This area was ruled Venezuelan in Paris in 1899.

On 14 December 2023, Ralph Gonsalves, the Prime Minister of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, hosted a meeting of the leaders of Guyana and Venezuela, as an initiative of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States, which he currently heads. Officials from the Caribbean Community, Brazil, Colombia and the United Nations also attended. The leaders agreed to not use any force or escalate tension. A joint statement said that both countries will settle the dispute in accordance with international law, despite adding that Venezuela does not recognise the jurisdiction of the ICJ.

In March 2024, Venezuela passed a law that designates Essequibo as a new state of Venezuela, governed from the city of Tumeremo. The law was submitted to the Supreme Court to validate its constitutionality.[6][7]

Further talks in Brazil are expected by April 2024.

I think that it was Clive James who wrote a review of Wogan and summed it as "Smile and make Wogan look good". Perhaps that's the job of the interviewee in political interviews now.

Yep, it's a performance both sides benefit from endlessly echoed going sthg like: "You make like you're asking me complex and challenging Qs that push me to the edge of my comfort zone, I'll respond with hard answers that also reveal my human side, and we both exude seriousness about the topic and ram home the establishment line on it, with mutual respect and admiration for a hard-fought exchange that we've all advanced from."

If it was possible to create the perfect BBC interviewer in the lab so that it always asked the correct questions with the same patronising drawl and always employed the right expressions, both vocal and facial (indulgent and dismissive as the occasion required), the outcome would be Stephen Sackur. He is a walking talking algorithm of a holographic robot down to his plastic dentures and perspex fingernails.
