Its a systemic failure: Individual donors do have a right to choose who (and who not) to spend money on.
The very, very, very simple act of mandating free party political broadcasts, as in the UK, could potentially wipe out the whole thing at a stroke. In fact the three simple steps that could entirely save US democracy might be:
- Unpaid party political broadcasts at election times
- AIPAC registers under FARA
- Ruling that corporations are not people.
Done. Except.. not one of the above has ever come remotely close to being achieved or, if you think about it, can be achieved by elected officials (somewhat ironically a dictator would have a better shot .. so to speak).
Plutocrats have checks and balances too: The cheques you know about, and the balances are the carefully balanced and continuously rebalanced two cheeks.

All this has been blown up from the likes of Lauren Bobert and Laura Loomer (the maniac Loomer is quoted in the post above and Bobert has been "demanding" "signs of life" for a day or so; amusingly Twitter responded with demands for signs of intelligence from her, to not avail apparently).
It's obvious they are going to keep him out of sight now he's not the candidate as they don't want the any media poisoning to go on. Hence the, possibly fictional, Covid diagnosis. It also allows him to slip the increasingly toxic Nuttyahoo meeting.
It's equally obvious the republicans are going to go on the attack with anything they have or can invent. He may be severely ill but for the various sources to then go on about a coup by Pelosi and all the rest of it is over the top.
The bottom line, literally, is the donors as noted above. Getting rid of Citzen's United (the limit-free donations, corporations as people, etc.) nonsense would be a big start. Maybe campaign spending limits.
The fraudian had that as their headline on this subject yesterday; "Record amount of donations as Harris nears nomination" or something like that. As if that makes her electable or a good candidate rather than just someone the oligarchs can do business with.
When you look at the numbers it's utterly obscene what they spend on getting people to think they are on their side. The dot that never get connected by the msm is, "If they are willing to spend this much to get there, how much must they make when they are there to make it worthwhile?"
Bridges collapsing, no health care, unhoused people all over the place and they are spunking billions on proxy wars, tv ads and demographic analysts. ...no amount of cajolery, and no attempts at ethical or social seduction, can eradicate from my heart a deep burning hatred for the Tory Party...So far as I am concerned they are lower than vermin.

These are all very good obsesrvations, but McCain Feingold tried very hard to impose spending limits:

This is why I say that the ship has sailed, there is no hope of elected officials making systemic reform in a good way. Long ago it was clear that collapse will be the de facto reform. Russia long planned to ensure it is a collapse that falls within its own footprint, so to speak - very wisely and maturely and strategically, and now hopefully successfully. There will be justice.
