...just why essentialy reading a prompter in front of a camera or asking " soft bat" questions of politicians commands such huge amounts of largese.

"Stars" the media calls them: go grey whilst collecting the filthy lucre and you become a "National Treasure".

They're paid for the gravitas, aren't they? For the way they their performance cements every racket into place: the illusion of a system devoted to 'accountability'; the myth of a 'difficult' and 'important' task properly remunerated; the fiction that 'a special class of person is needed to run the really big things'...
