Venezuela judge issues arrest warrant for opposition leader after disputed election
Edmundo González, widely believed to have beaten President Nicolás Maduro in the election, faces arrest for alleged crimes carrying long sentences if convicted.
A Venezuelan judge on Monday issued an arrest warrant for Edmundo González, the opposition politician widely believed to have beaten President Nicolás Maduro in the recent election, for alleged crimes that could see him spend the rest of his life behind bars if convicted.
González, a 75-year-old retired diplomat, was catapulted into the eye of Venezuela’s political storm earlier this year when he agreed to challenge Maduro in the 28 July presidential election in the place of the banned opposition leader María Corina Machado.
Maduro subsequently claimed victory, without providing proof and in spite of a growing body of evidence suggesting the unpopular authoritarian actually suffered a heavy defeat because of public anger over an economic collapse that has seen millions flee abroad.
I lost count of the propaganda terms and blatant lies used in just the start of that article. Not providing proof is EXACTLY what the opposition have done; the "receipts" from the election have been given to the press and show Maduro just winning. The "opposition" claim they have some that show irregularities but so far they haven't shown them or provided them to the Supreme Court.
Also, "Banned opposition leader Maria Corina Machado" is a nice gentle way of describing a convicted criminal who has been shown to have tried to execute a coup at least twice.
They just have no shame whatsoever lying through their teeth when they are told to. ...no amount of cajolery, and no attempts at ethical or social seduction, can eradicate from my heart a deep burning hatred for the Tory Party...So far as I am concerned they are lower than vermin.
I wonder what could possibly be behind the economic collapse? Sanctions by Vanuatu, Tuvalu, Fiji? NM
Ah, that María Corina Machado, the so called "Venezuelan Margaret Thatcher". I see she attended Yale University too, that has to get the alarm bells ringing!
