The head of Hezbollah’s drone and cruise missile command has been killed in an Israeli attack on Beirut, the Lebanon-based militant group has confirmed in a post on Telegram on Friday.

The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) claimed on Thursday to have killed Mohammad Srour, also known as Abu Saleh, in a strike on an apartment block in the southern suburb of Beirut.

“Fighter jets attacked Beirut and killed Mohammad Hussein Srour,” the IDF said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

Lebanon’s National News Agency has reported that “three missiles” had targeted “a residential apartment in a ten-story building.”

In an update on Telegram on Friday, Hezbollah confirmed the death of Srour, 51, who joined the militant group in 1986 and “led military operations for the Islamic resistance’s air force on the Lebanese support front.”

If I didn't have just an inkling on how this cruel, unjust world works, I would be absolutely astonished at how this unprecedented terrorism is allowed to continue and a mass murderer is allowed to address the UN.
Despairing stuff.

But it's the total uselessness of such assassinations, how do we know he was the most effective man for the job anyway, and if Israel is making the assumption he's irreplaceable, well, that's just stupid. They are clever, their successful assassinations should show Israel's enemies that they have incredibly good and effective intelligence. They must have moles in these organisations and / or some very effective electronic wizardry available.

Still, it remains true that in its cleverness Israel reveals its stupidity - the rising stakes that they'll betting they'll still "win" by cowering the populations might have worked previously, but it's less obvious they're going to continue to work. The problem though as always is the US backing (and UK and Germany), it is totally unconditional and highly dangerous, like having a serial kller in the family - protecting him and giving him the means and encouragement to continue. .

Whatever else one thinks of Nasrallah it's patently obvious he is educated and temperate: of course that might be exactly why the Israelis want him out the picture.

American denials are but nonsense. Their reconnaissance planes were apparently airborne and these are their megabombs which were deliberately designed for just such an operation: " “an advanced 5,000-pound [2,200kg] bunker buster that was created in 2021” and then given to Israel.

We can only hope he's not beneath the rubble or the whole middle east may be in trouble.

Is there any non-Israeli confirmation that this was a hit on what they claim was: "...the terror organization's central headquarters "? Or might it be they were targeting her actual residence in the hope that her father was present?
