Begging letters from The Intercept. What the HELL?

I got this begging letter in my inbox from The Intercept. The organisation has been sending similar ones for several weeks. This seems very dodgy indeed, given that the owner of The Intercept is one PIERRE OMIDYAR, one of the richest creeps on the planet.
I’ll be honest: When we launched this month’s fundraising drive, I expected it to be an uphill fight.
As The Intercept’s CEO, I know that fundraising has become difficult for many nonprofit news outlets. And The Intercept is no ordinary news organization — we specialize in challenging investigations that upset the status quo and anger the powers that be.
That’s why the outpouring of generosity from readers like you has been so humbling. And now, with just hours left before our midnight deadline, we have an exciting update: The next $5,000 in donations will be matched dollar for dollar by a generous donor.
Friend, I know you share my commitment to journalism that breaks through the noise to challenge the status quo. And that’s why I’m hoping you’ll join me in making a donation before midnight.
If you’ve saved your payment information with ActBlue Express, your donation will go through immediately:
They never fail to reach the goal at the last minute because the “angel matching donor” has bottomless pockets** but needs the cover of your tiny donation, in order to claim the outlet has that coveted title “wholly supported by readers like you” as opposed to, say, oh, an intelligence agency front company or big party donor.
** (unless they already gave it all to Israel or Ukraine)
