I saw it earlier today and thought I would post it, but then got sidetracked.
It's interesting quite how at odds with their general stance on this he is. Perhaps they are using him as a fig leaf so they can say they allowed all sides to comment, even though it's enormously, massively biased just on a "column inches" basis, never mind the linguistic fuckery they pull and all the other propagandistic manipulation.
I saw this at the bottom (quite ironic that in their "Comment is Free" section they don't open this to comments) "Do you have an opinion on the issues raised in this article? If you would like to submit a response of up to 300 words by email to be considered for publication in our letters section, please click here."
I wonder which responses they will publish??? I think we can guess....no amount of cajolery, and no attempts at ethical or social seduction, can eradicate from my heart a deep burning hatred for the Tory Party...So far as I am concerned they are lower than vermin.
Has he yet apologized for acting as an Israeli stooge for years?
"Those who insisted the antisemitism crisis was a smear campaign and nothing else – that Labour’s opponents would always seize on it did not mean it was not a very real problem – not only caused pain to Jewish people but also helped strip away Corbynism’s idealistic sheen."
...at least the part about Giora Eiland which I remember reading about near the start of the 'conflict'. A search of Jones' twitter reveals that he read it on Norman Finkelstein's blog but was asking readers for a source because the link didn't work for him: 'Owen Jones @owenjonesjourno Oct 15 I'm trying to find a citation for this quote from former Israeli general Giora Eiland. It's on @normfinkelstein's blog here, but the link is dead. I can't find it on Google. Is it translated here somewhere from Hebrew? Any help much appreciated. https://www.normanfinkelstein.com/fighting-amalek-in-gaza-what-israelis-say-and-western-media-ignore/' - https://nitter.poast.org/owenjonesjourno/status/1846166381835723153#m
The Finkelstein article is from Nov 2023. Searching for 'Eiland' shows Jones didn't mention the name until he started researching his recent article. It's also the only time he's mentioned Norman, as far as I can tell. So he probably saw it on a re-tweet somewhere. Wouldn't be surprised if it's the one and only mention of the name throughout the msm. A search of the graun website only turns out a couple of links to a Seumas Milne article from 2008: https://duckduckgo.com/?q=giora+eiland+site%3Ahttps%3A%2F%2Fwww.theguardian.com&t=ffab&ia=web I suppose we should be grateful...
My guess is the graun are trying to trim their sails on the whole genocide thing, so they've allowed Jones a little more play on his leash, but I would expect the rest of their coverage to maintain the same relentless pro-Israel bias. re: Jones, I also refuse to trust him, especially since he never apologised for his role in endorsing the a/s witchhunt - which laid the ground for the Starmer govt's unconditional support of the genocide and has made nearly everybody scared of criticising Israel. I think he also knows where the line is, hence being careful to performatively & repeatedly condemn Hamas 'war crimes', not mentioning the Hannibal doctrine or deconstructing the more egregious zionist lies about mass rape, babies in ovens, Hamas bases under hospitals etc (correct me if I'm wrong, I haven't followed everything he's done).
Ali Abunimah has his number, and is still being slandered for it:
Ali Abunimah @AliAbunimah Sep 9 Like many other Palestinians, I’ve been blocked by @owenjonesjourno for years. If you’re wondering why it’s because we at @intifada have held him accountable for the terrible things he has said and done to help “Israel” and its genocidal lobby, which he has still never acknowledged or made amends for. I personally don’t care how many great videos you think he’s made over the last 11 months, his refusal to be accountable, his refusal to acknowledge the harm he’s done means I cannot trust him. This is all I’ll say on this and please do not bother with your “Ali don’t be divisive, we’re all on the same side” tweets. We are not. https://electronicintifada.net/content/how-owen-jones-learned-stop-worrying-and-love-zionism/34986
VICTORIA @ANTIVICTORIA On your word alone I just Unfollowed him. Then I read your article. And I'm kicking myself for ever following him in the first place. My only defense is, I'd never heard of him before. electronicintifada.net/conte… How Owen Jones learned to stop worrying and love Zionism Israel "fundamentally different" from other settler-colonial projects, claims Guardian columnist. electronicintifada.net
Owen Jones @owenjonesjourno If you're going to unfollow me in an article based on raging deceit, distortions and lies by omission, that's your call.
Ali Abunimah @AliAbunimah I take @owenjonesjourno’s allegations of “raging deceit” in an article published by @intifada very seriously. However I’m still blocked by him so could someone please let him know that he should inform us of any errors so we can immediately correct them? We haven’t been made aware of any errors let alone “deceit” since it was published in March 2022
Ismail Lamie @ismail_lamie Again, Ali, I don’t understand why you keep on fueling division within the people who are tirelessly advocating for the Palestinian cause. Please think about your “everything or nothing” principle. We were drawn certain cards, we play with them, until things change..
Ali Abunimah @AliAbunimah Have some dignity and stop accepting crumbs from people who spent years working against us with our enemies. They are the divisive ones. Don’t lecture me on this again.
Ismail Lamie @ismail_lamie I am not lecturing anyone, Ali. I know better then to do so, and I truly respect and admire your work, as I always say. All I am saying is that going on full force, despite the fact that we disagree with certain things, isn’t necessarily the right thing to do right now.
Ali Abunimah @AliAbunimah You’re free to side with the man who worked for years against Palestinians with the anti-Palestinian lobby, just because he exploited this genocide to rebrand himself. I don’t want to. Let’s agree to disagree on how much betrayal and duplicity to accept. My tolerance is low.
