Does anyone understand how Keir Starmer ever had a successful career as a barrister?

Does anyone understand this? Starmer is an awful public speaker, dull and uninteresting. Most of his interviews are cringe-worthy - he never even attempts an answer to questions and can't seem to think on his feet. Instead, he robotically repeats the same inane phrases - fixing the foundations; £22b black hole etc etc. He can't seem to present any sort of 'case' by marshalling facts and evidence and arguing his position forcefully which, one would have thought, was meat and drink to a barrister.

So, I wonder how he climbed so high. Anyone any ideas?

That very blandness. He's a cipher: there's nothing in there. No ideas, no empathy and if he ever possessed a sense of morality it was the disposable type & he threw it away when it became inconvenient.

Nothing gets in the way of the job which is him doing what he's told: the perfect credentials for an establishment lackey.

I can pretty much tell you definitively that every barrister who practices law in a London-based chambers has been to OxBridge. Starmer (he of the B,B,C at A-level) dipped himself at Oxford as a postgraduate, so he was in the door.

After that point ..

Have you ever been in a team where, whatever you do right, the correct person gets the credit/blame :-)? As a mediocrity, Starmer’s route to career progress was via precisely the characteristics you describe (roughly summarizable as a “safe pair of hands”), combined with credit for the successes of others, or failures that could be blamed on others. It always works, which is something people with integrity usually realize after its too late.

I think you put that rather well. No-one ever mistook me as a safe pair of hands for the management. I read a book by Charles Handy when I was a student nurse and remembered one thing ever after - that beyond the second tier of management the amount of 'work' done which goes towards the ostensible central purpose of the organisation is inversely proportional.
