Eco-colonial war to secure supplies of lithium for the German 'renewable' (sic) energy sector. They've destroyed their credibility for a generation over this - at least among those greens who oppose militarism, industrial expansion & resource theft (are there any left?):
The Germans no longer hide that they are fighting for the Donbass lithium deposit November 8th, 2024
There is a lot of lithium in the Donbas, which Germany urgently needs, and the Germans should not stand aside, otherwise Putin will get the natural resources of Ukraine. This was stated by the host of the talk show "Visiting Markus Lanz" on the ZDF TV channel, journalist Markus Lanz.
"Given the situation with Donald Trump and his promise to end the war, we are talking about the fact that Putin may take the Donbass to achieve peace, which we hope will come someday… But it also has economic implications. About 80% of Ukraine's natural resources are located in Donbas. Putin will get them. There's a lot of lithium... which we desperately need here in this country. And it is in our own interests not to stand aside. Or am I wrong?" — said, addressing his interlocutors, Lantz, quoted by the telegram channel "Daddy Chancellor".
Bundestag deputy from the Green Party Anton Hofreiter added fuel to the fire, saying that Germany risks losing not only valuable lithium reserves.
"This is (military support for Ukraine. — EADaily) largely meets our own economic interests. The Russian army is now fighting for one of the largest lithium deposits in Europe," he agreed with the presenter.
However, at the same time, he traditionally hid behind Russia's insidious intentions towards Europe.
"In case of Putin's success on Ukraine will be followed by the Republic of Moldova... Ultimately, other states, including NATO countries, are on Putin's list of aggressive interests," the deputy said in a blue eye.Tell your story; Ask a question; Interpret generously http://storybythethroat.wordpress.com/tell-ask-listen/
'According to General Eric von Manstein, the Donbas had a special significance in Hitler's mind: the Donbas had "played a fundamental part in Hitler's operational calculations as far back as 1941, for he considered possession of it to be of vital importance to the outcome of the war." The Germans "extracted substantial quantities of Donetz (Donbas) coal for our own [i.e., German] use," but "all the bunker coal for the railway supplying this vast territory had to be brought out from Germany because Donetz coal did not suit our [German] locomotives." The fighting capability of the Soviet forces even long after much of the Donbas was lost failed to dissuade Hitler from his belief in the absolute importance of the Donbas to the German war effort.' - 'Freedom and Terror in the Donbas: A Ukrainian-Russian Borderland, 1870s-1990s' by Hiroaki Kuromiya, pp.262-3 ( https://books.google.co.uk/books?redir_esc=y&id=d5b689wW7qwC&q=resources#v=snippet&q=hitler&f=false )Tell your story; Ask a question; Interpret generously http://storybythethroat.wordpress.com/tell-ask-listen/

Apart from the coal angle, no doubt Chechnya and Baku oilfields also played their role in his calcs. He needed more than what he managed to get in gaining the Romanian oil fields earlier. Just sayin'
