When people make powerful speeches effectively they use simple language. I have a schoolboy knowledge of French, but I was able to follow most of it well. Churchill did the same. The power of simple language told clearly - you don't even need to be particularly passionate to convey what you wish to say, but this lady combined passion and clarity admirably. Well done Mathilde Panot.

In contrast to this, where is the single sitting MP in the House of Commons to do the same. Jeremy Corbyn should, but his way of speaking too often smacks of deference. The humanity's there alright, but it remains muted. And of course, George Galloway's not there any longer.

Yes, I saw those, obviously, but I deliberately ignored them to see how much I'd understand. So, yes, I cheated, but not as much as I would normally think I'd have to. But didn't you do well?!
