Merkel indicates that Putin’s fear Kyiv could join Nato after she left office helped pave the way for his full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Without specifying when he made the comments, Merkel says Putin had told her: “You won’t be chancellor for ever. And then they’ll be a Nato member. And I want to prevent that.”
A pity she's excluded herself from discussion and action since her retirement, perhaps a bit of sniping from the sidelines as to the horrors and stupidity of what is happening now might have brought some enlightenment and change? OTOH, she has been successfully slurred as a Putin apologist and Russian appeaser. and pushed to the side in public discourse, similar to Corbyn. OTOH again, her own confession of conducting diplomacy in bad faith in regard to Minsk 2 doesn't commend her in the matter of Putin and Russia to me or those contributing here, I imagine.
