Because of his senior status in the CIA, Gates was close to many figures who played significant roles in the Iran–Contra Affair and was in a position to have known of their activities. In 1984, as deputy director of CIA, Gates advocated that the U.S. initiate a bombing campaign against Nicaragua and that the U.S. do everything in its power short of direct military invasion of the country to remove the Sandinista government.[30]

Gates was an early subject of Independent Counsel's investigation, but the investigation of Gates intensified in the spring of 1991 as part of a larger inquiry into the Iran–Contra activities of CIA officials. This investigation received an additional impetus in May 1991, when President George H. W. Bush nominated Gates to be Director of Central Intelligence (DCI). The chairman and vice chairman of the United States Senate Select Committee on Intelligence (SSCI) requested, in a letter to the Independent Counsel on May 15, 1991, any information that would "significantly bear on the fitness" of Gates for the CIA post.

Gates consistently testified that he first heard on October 1, 1986, from Charles E. Allen, the national intelligence officer who was closest to the Iran initiative, that proceeds from the Iran arms sales may have been diverted to support the Contras. Other evidence proves, however, that Gates received a report on the diversion during the summer of 1986 from DDI Richard Kerr.[31] The issue was whether the Independent Counsel could prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Gates was deliberately not telling the truth when he later claimed not to have remembered any reference to the diversion before meeting with Allen in October. ...

Look him up and realise he's utterly dreadful and not to be taken seriously (imo of course).

Their basic case is that Gaetz doesn't take AIPAC money so him banging 17-year olds at drug parties was a honey trap partly helped by a sex predator/fraudster (Greenberg) who got busted and needed something to feed the feds to get a better deal. It's basically a repost of that Twitter mess from "Mel", all of it trying to paint Gaetz as the poor victim in a "deep state"/Bill Barr/Democrat plot.

The whole Iran hostage/blackmail thing sounds like it could be an interesting story somewhere in there but throughout the whole thing they never deny Gaetz had sex with this girl/these girls but it "can't be statutory rape because she had a fake driving licence". Good luck proving that one in court; it's a step up from "Well she said she was seventeen".

The original twitter thread came from some Florida-based MAGA operative with no journalistic background or credibility (as far as my short dive into it found) and then Dore and Carrol took it up and repeated it, mostly reading it off the tweets.

It's notable that no other journalists are looking at this at all; what you would expect from the corporate tools but nobody else? At all? Only MAGA social media/influencer types?

It's just smoke imo and if IranHostageBlackmailGate blows up into the story of the century I'll look like (more of) an idiot (they will need a better name though

I think it all might be an attempt to distract from the way the cabinet is shaping up to be counter to pretty much everything he campaigned on and to bolster his "Trump v the deep state, this time it's personal" narrative.

Two points about that. I've always associated George Galloway with that phrase but does anyone know if it is his originally or was he quoting someone?

Second, the truth of the "two cheeks" was never more apparent and I'd always thought the consensus on the board was that electoral politics was largely useless which is why I'm quite surprised about the faith shown in the incoming US administration and how they "might drain the swamp this time" or "might be different on x, y or z".

I hadn't noticed anyone doing that but it's still too soon to say (I'm not holding my breath). I think it much more likely that the Septics are being overtaken by events. The Democrats and their state cronies seem to me to be trying to saddle Trump with the odium of their defeats in Europe and the middle east, ready for his departure in four years. If I were him, I'd shit the bed before his term ended, knowing that I wouldn't have to spend the night in a shitted bed.

He certainly popularised it. I'd heard it before here but not in a party political context and I think Galloway claimed to have got it from a Scottish woman at a demonstration he was at which would fit.
Another visually evocative favourite of mine in the same scurrilous vein used to describe a ludicrous pretentious person somewhat Ill-suited to their job/ task is "A Coo with a gun...":
