At first, reading this, "They're one of, if not the, "most respected" Italian families in the area, according to Giovanna Aquia Blatterman." I thought they were going to try to paint him as mobbed up, but it didn't pan out like that, unless they are being really subtle.

I agree. Most likely they are they are holding back and seeing how the story develops, and then go in for the kill later. Hence neutral now, and leaving the bread crumbs for the later change in story.
