An excellent conversation. Ta. Thabo Mbeki was fingered in this exchange. Following on from Mandela he (apparently needing very little sleep) got lost in the Internet. Adopted HIV denialist stance and neoliberalism. I saw only 30 odd %.

I don't know if you got to the bit where Sayle mentions Jackson Pollock and Encounter magazine and their part in the CIA-funded and supported cultural campaign during the Cold War 'to nudge the intelligentsia of Western Europe away from its lingering fascination with Marxism and Communism to a view more accommodating to the "American way".'

The quote is from The Cultural Cold War by Frances Stonor Saunders. It shows how the CIA supported publications, international conferences, prize-giving etc.

The poet Stephen Spender appears to have been taken in when editor of Encounter Magazine.

As we know, the CIA continues its pernicious influence today, long after the so-called Cold War is officially over.

No, I didn't. I've read Saunders' book though. Highly recommended!

There's a new book on the topic, "Cold Warriors" by Duncan White which is supposed to be decent.
