Seems like a fig leaf to me, although the comment by the producers was inadvertently true and hilarious:

“Focusing on children humanises the story,” said Hammash. “The news doesn’t give you a full image – our aim was to go beyond the news.

No shit it doesn't. (Unless of course this was subtle attempt to throw some shade on the BBC News coverage of the genocide).

I too wondered why they had shown this very painful and moving doc, with its 11-year old hero. Someone somewhere has had a twinge of conscience (or fear?) that the avalanche of propaganda from the BBC is really too much to bear the pretence of impartial news coverage and has to be tempered with at least a token effort. Internally the BBC must be in turmoil at their blatant and shameful bias.
