"For a really long time, we thought the only way to make up for the atrocities we committed in World War Two was to make sure it never happened again […] and we thought we needed to demilitarise," Charlotte explains.

"But now we are in a situation where we have to fight for our values and democracy and freedom. We need to adapt."

"There are lots of Germans who still feel strange about big investments in our military," Ludwig Stein agrees. "But I think considering the things that have happened in the past few years, there's no other real option."

18 years old.
Knows everything.
Knows about atrocities that her grandparents committed in WW2 and for them not to be repeated.
A fucking teenager! Knows a lot.
But is ready to give up pacifism and get going with the atrocities of her grandparents too!

"The country's top general has told the BBC the cash boost is urgently needed because he believes Russian aggression won't stop at Ukraine.

"We are threatened by Russia. We are threatened by Putin. We have to do whatever is needed to deter that," Gen Carsten Breuer says. He warns that Nato should be braced for a possible attack in as little as four years.

"It's not about how much time I need, it's much more about how much time Putin gives us to be prepared," the defence chief says bluntly. "And the sooner we are prepared the better.""

Well, he would say that, wouldn't he?
Pity to see the German youth buying into the lie but they're not alone.
Of course, de rigueur to see the BBC reporting it without a word of scepticism.

Unfortunately Kujat is correct .. however, the political and economic reality is different today for the EU/UK elite, although that statement is also true today.

Friedrich Merz, the country's next chancellor and a former head of German BlackRock, as well as EU/UK, are in economic crisis. He wants to create military industrial complex slush fund to get them out of the fix. I guess this is similar to actions by mustachioed man in the 1930's. Will it come to fruition? No idea .. we wait.

I wonder what do the German people think of this madness? When Nato (lightly) rearmed West Germany in 1954 it did so against the expressed will of German public opinion.
A cornerstone of German and therefore European prosperity has been cheap energy from Russia fuelling manufacturing exports from Germany. Postwar Germany became clever at building cars rather than tanks. Germany is naw arming against Russia while punishing it by refusing to buy its oil. German manufacturing has had many years of faltering investment, for reasons not clear to me. But It is usually true alas, that the public will pay taxes to fund armaments more readily than they will pay taxes to build hospitals. Yet In pure economic terms military keyensianism, although it did pull US out of the Great Depression, would have been less useful than civic Keynesianism.

Historically, the Great Depression in US was in 1929. Roosevelt introduced New Deal in 1933 which was civic Keynesianism, lasting until about 1938 which helped somewhat. The military Keynesianism took over c 1940 odd.
