I first heard that expression from a friend of mine in the early 80s a fine Orish name of Furguson, an Olympic grade swimmer....fit as fuck, only drunk PILS from bottles as it was "healthier"!

I always took it to be a reference to the above eschatological conclusion: that he was drawing a reference to the trampling of humanity at the end of days.

You're not the first to be flummoxed by the idiom. When the book was newly translated into Japanese Steinbeck's wife was talking to a Japanese man at the press opening who told her how wonderful the book was but puzzled by the title. Apparently it had been translated into Japanese as "The Angry Raisins"...

Steinbeck was a writer to behold imo. I was very much impressed with his 'Of mice and men'. Something like that stays with you etc.

In the 80s and 90s when I visited, seppoes were 'just' dysfunctional. Ginormous rats and burning cars on the highways in NY and glitz in LA etc. Swaggering decline since then i.e. tent cities etc. My sincere condolences for the 99%. Perhaps coming our way here?
