Windows 7 question

Noticed that 10 is being discontinued in favour of 11, how do I get there?

I am on the same boat. First check if your PC etc. is capable of using W11.

Personally I don't like W11, so I am trying to stay with W10. A similar scenario as was W7 to W8, except this time Microshaft is stooping to gangsterism.

W7/W8 transition involved only 2% customer probs, W10/W11 transition is whopping 40% of customer probs. Waste of perfectly adequate machines, environmental damage etc .. grr. All the while Microshaft is raking in the profits.

Need to install Windows Defender to stay with W10, I am advised.

Plenty of videos on line on this subject.

Just in case, I am also migrating my data on to external HDs.

It should be giving you auto-update prompts (depending on your settings) but 7 to 11 is a big jump.

This articles seems to suggest you will have to install 10 first THEN upgrade to 11.

Windows Update would be the first place to go (type "Windows Update" into the Start search bar BUT before you do anything, check your hardware is up to running Windows 10/11 and back anything you can't afford to lose up.

If you have apps/programs/stuff that you use a lot, check it will still function in Windows 11 before updating.

I use the "if you don't absolutely have to, don't update" maxim when it comes to OS. Even when the support end comes (I think it's the end of this month) all it means is there won't be any more security updates for that OS; it will still run as it does now it just means any new security holes won't be patched.

Must say I didn't think that K264 was going to jump from 7 to 11. I thought perhaps it was an error on his part to mention 7. I would have thought that if he was using hardware that came with 7, it would be near impossible.

Nevertheless, people still use 7 to this day, from what I hear.

Two straightforward options are obviously to stay with 7 and consult YT channels ref security options. Second, use the alternative Unix platforms (Ubunti) as per Ian's suggestion. I am more or less certain it is far less clunky that Microshaft Windows, but it does require some effort to learn : /.

I always hated MS crap meself, being v. long in the tooth on the IT front well before Bill Gates surreptitiously outfoxed the Big Blue with his source code licence.

I run 7, 8 and 10 on various PCs with no issues. Subsequent PCs are Linux. You will only be prompted for 11 if you have a TPM chip, etc.

Time to switch to Linux?

It's open source, free, has decent online support mainly via forums with other knowledgeable user/designers, and by now has equivalent software to most of the main programmes in windows & apple. I switched to Ubuntu (one of the Linux 'distros') 4 or 5 years ago and haven't looked back. My rather ancient laptop had been seizing up, crashing, going super slow and was about to fail on a windows update hurdle. Ubuntu gave it a new lease of life, and is still going strong. Even the DVD player started working again, long after I'd given up trying to find whatever update it needed to circumvent the planned obsolescence of the thing... Did I mention it's free? My only mistake was using a memory stick with back-up materials on it as the installation device. This corrupts the files, and I haven't been able to access them since - so use a clean stick.

No probs. Takes a bit of getting used to, as the guides say, but not a million miles away from the other operating systems. There are ways of trialling it first, eg: on a separate CD Rom / flash drive, or even having it installed side by side with windows and choosing which you want to use at start-up. That might eat up a lot of memory though. Up to you, but I'd recommend it, especially if windows are making your life miserable. I quite enjoyed the feeling of symbolically giving the middle finger to Bill Gates when I made the switch
