re: accepted history - was it ever thus, or have we entered a new phase where the most outrageous lies are accepted as fact just because we've been told Mr Bad is Bad? Al Quaeda / ISIS headchopper in the white house is a pretty shocking example, but then heads of state from Saudi Arabia, israel and all the other despotisms the US has propped up over the centuries are guilty of far worse crimes, if you're looking at the scale of atrocities. So in a sense it's entirely appropriate for al-Jolani to be there grinning like the cheshire cat. The only difference would be the whiplash of someone who was treated as public enemy #1 mere months ago now being offered all the diplomatic niceties, and everybody is just expected to go along with it. Is the complete lack of dissent (except for on the margins where it can be safely ignored) the new thing?
