"We must redouble our efforts," he told the House.

"The UK, Europe and our allies will stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Ukraine, stand up to Putin's aggression and work to deliver a just and lasting peace."

Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch, also speaking in the Commons, said: "The thoughts of the whole House will rightly be with family of Lance Corporal Hooley, who tragically died supporting Ukraine in her fight for freedom."...

Probably one of Hereford lot (SAS) given the regiment and all the attention. The Paras are not sending single troopers to observe weapon tests but they are one of the most prominent sources for members of "the regiment".

If any boots are on the ground it more likely to be SF than regs.

Paras are the largest constituency (40%) of the SAS e.g. Ben Griffin was 2 Para and 22 SAS (nm)

My interpretation: he was killed while demonstrating a new offensive capability to Ukrainian forces near to the front lines.

Given the SAS/SBS have to sign the Official Secrets Act they are much more likely to be used in Ukraine as opposed to regular soldiers. I've just assumed for ages that they would have been employed even if only in training roles. Presumably they would make sure not to let them get near being killed, or much more embarassingly, captured so probably kept away from major combat.

We'll never know of course but I'd bet he was SF.

anti-tank weapons, possibly NLAWs? Those trainers were actually from the Ranger Regiment, who are just grunts - "craphats".

SAS' specialty is sabotage and the Paras are elite shock troops, operating behind enemy lines. If someone was training the Ukrainians in the tactics of holding defensive positions, it would be the Rangers, but the British would be behind the curve, compared to Ukrainians, in dealing with drones and thermobarics

I know of ex-Paras who went to Ukraine as mercenaries. What exactly serving Paras are doing in testing a purposefully nebulous "new defensive capability" is difficult to parse. They're more likely to be going on the offensive.

Chris Ryan (Bravo Two Zero) had been reserve SAS. To join the SAS proper, he first had to go through Para selection, which he partially failed (passed level two, failed level three). He subsequently passed the SAS selection.

Para training is particularly painful. From one data point, the dropout rate in Para selection was something like 45 out of 50, dropping to just 1 left after three years.

Both those elite units play the part of the enemy in army exercises. When craphats are captured or surrender, they do not get treated gently!

my point was if he was special forces they (almost) never report "SAS man killed". Instead they report his old regiment. And given the Paras make up a big chunk of the SAS,all the plaudits from high level pols and military and the somewhat sensitive nature of the assignment (being unacknowledged on the ground in a "foreign" war) it made me think he was probably SAS and problaby doing more than "observing".

As sashimi has posted, there are some other options.

One thing is for sure, "they" are not telling the truth.

which is pretty much the same thing as SAS/SBS. Recruited from 1 Para, RM Commandos and Rock Apes it seems to be a functioning unit but also a pipeline towards SF.
