The way he drags you into that world and its little dramas that are massive to the people involved which are then made tiny by the volcano and which is all then made tiny by the disinterest of the far-off viewer. Peerless songwriting and if you think of Gaza for example, still extremely accurate.

Of course the Gaza comparison doesn't really work as in the song he contrasts the complete immersion in the world of that hotel casino with the throwaway item on the news and the apathy of the viewer, where Gaza was headline news a lot but the principle definitely still applies.
