All the hallmarks of having been compromised. His mistake was believing there was a way back, but as a member of the Oxford/Washingon DC cocktail set, the pain of potential loss could probably be anticipated.

It turned out, in the end, he needed some pretty comprehensive health coverage. In this sense at least one could argue his woes were self-inflicted.
