Well, that's the end of NATO... you can predict the utterly spineless Eurotrash & Brittunculi will make protest, gnashing of teeth and wailing & weeping noises will of course be obligatory before meekly handing it over...then they will spend an age pretending that they haven't really been stiffed by "Daddy" & that everything is still fine, but that's it for NATO really: a paper tiger.

Donald Trump threatened a 25% tariff on a slew of European countries including Denmark, Germany, France and the UK – until the US is allowed to purchase Greenland, in an extraordinary escalation of the president’s bid to claim the autonomous Danish territory.

In a lengthy post on Saturday on Truth Social, Trump said he would impose a 10% tariff on Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Finland beginning 1 February, “on any and all goods sent to the United States of America”.

He said the tariff will increase to 25% on 1 June.

“This Tariff will be due and payable until such time as a Deal is reached for the Complete and Total purchase of Greenland,” Trump said.

The president’s interest in Greenland intensified following the US raid that captured Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro earlier in January. While he has claimed the Arctic territory’s current status poses a national security threat to the US, this has been disputed by US allies, including Denmark.

In the Saturday morning post, Trump said Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands and Finland “have journeyed to Greenland, for purposes unknown”. It was an apparent reference to Nato allies deploying troops in Greenland on Thursday in response to Trump’s threats to forcefully take the Arctic island, which is an autonomous territory of Denmark.

Trump suggested, incorrectly, that residents of Greenland “currently have two dogsleds as protection” – and claimed “China and Russia want Greenland” to the detriment of the US. “Nobody will touch this sacred piece of land, especially since the national security of the United States, and the world at large, is at stake,” Trump wrote...

Not sure Russkies would be interested, they have the Arctic in their back-pocket: Russia maintains the largest Arctic presence, claiming over 53% of the Arctic coastline.

Also an interesting point being that Muricans don't have any icebreakers. Let's see how that plays out. Vapourware vs reality etc.

What needs to be done is simple: You tell Trump quietly to Fuck Off.

That if he continues in this vein with his gangster demands with menaces, then all Yanqui bases in the UK and Europe will be closed and all military personnel send home.

He's made it very clear after all that the US is now a threatening hostile power: it therefore should be treated as such.

But of course, that won't happen because the Independence of European states is an illusion.
They/we are all Satraps to the Yanqui empire and will bend: them bend over lower exactly when and if instructed.

As has been pointed out, if Trump was really concerned about 'national security' he could have easily negotiated with a compliant Denmark/Greenland for more bases/troops in Greenland.

One suspects the main motivation is greed:

Still, if NATO is finally killed off and Europeans forced to negotiate a pan-European security framework with Russia, it cannot all be bad.

I notice these maps only show minerals accessible around the coast and suitable inlets. Do you think Trump & co have seen private data indicating substantially more minerals under the ice sheet, and are making a move now to secure it in the future when the ice has melted away enough to make mining possible? I've no idea how difficult it is to do this kind of geological survey through a thick sheet of ice, or indeed at what point it becomes viable for mining interests to start cutting their way through, but it's probably a safe bet that "there's more where that came from" ref the coastal minerals. Easy pickings, it would seem, for the US military - they just have to push over Denmark and put any EU complainy-pantses in their place, which is embarrassingly easy, as we've seen again and again. It's just surprising that the US hasn't attempted this before, at least not to my knowledge...

Anyway, agreed it would be positive if NATO disbands and the EU countries develop a spine as a consequence. I mean, a pox on both their houses, but the outcome would be better for ordinary ppl.
