US Secretary of State Marco Rubio just gave one of the most explicitly pro-colonialist speeches I have seen in the 21st century.
The US empire wants Europe to help it recolonize the Global South.
Rubio praised Western colonialists for "settl[ing] new continents, build[ing] vast empires extending out across the globe".
Then Rubio complained about the Global South's decolonization, portraying it as a sinister communist plot.
Rubio lamented: "The great Western empires had entered into terminal decline, accelerated by godless communist revolutions and by anti-colonial uprisings that would transform the world and drape the red hammer and sickle across vast swaths of the map in the years to come".
Rubio delivered this speech at the Munich Security Conference, surrounded by European leaders, who gave him a standing ovation. They loved the pro-colonialist diatribe.
The US secretary of state insisted that North American and European imperialists should unite in order to reverse "the West’s managed decline", to revive "the West’s age of dominance", to "renew the greatest civilization in human history".
This is a blatant call by the US empire to resuscitate Western colonialism and recolonize the Global South (which represents the Global Majority).
What the US empire did to Gaza, Venezuela, and currently Cuba is what it wants to do to the entire Global South.
This is from the official transcript published by the US State Department: state.gov/releases/office-of…
Some people are surprised that Marco Rubio gave such an explicitly pro-colonialist speech, given his family is technically of Cuban descent.
HOWEVER, Rubio made it clear he does NOT identify as Cuban. He identifies as a US American of European descent.
In the same speech, he praised the European colonialists who ethnically cleansed the Native Americans and founded the US, and he stressed "we will always be a child of Europe".
Rubio then proudly traced his ancestry back to Italy (Piedmont-Sardinia) and Spain.
Rubio does not identify with Cuba, Latin America, and the Caribbean; he identifies with Western colonialists.
And Rubio emphasized that he, in his capacity as the chief of the US empire's foreign policy, wants to revive Western colonialism
'And finally, we can no longer place the so-called global order above the vital interests of our people and our nations. We do not need to abandon the system of international cooperation we authored, and we don’t need to dismantle the global institutions of the old order that together we built. But these must be reformed. These must be rebuilt.
For example, the United Nations still has tremendous potential to be a tool for good in the world. But we cannot ignore that today, on the most pressing matters before us, it has no answers and has played virtually no role. It could not solve the war in Gaza. Instead, it was American leadership that freed captives from barbarians and brought about a fragile truce. It had not solved the war in Ukraine. It took American leadership and partnership with many of the countries here today just to bring the two sides to the table in search of a still-elusive peace.
It was powerless to constrain the nuclear program of radical Shia clerics in Tehran. That required 14 bombs dropped with precision from American B-2 bombers. And it was unable to address the threat to our security from a narcoterrorist dictator in Venezuela. Instead, it took American Special Forces to bring this fugitive to justice.
In a perfect world, all of these problems and more would be solved by diplomats and strongly worded resolutions. But we do not live in a perfect world, and we cannot continue to allow those who blatantly and openly threaten our citizens and endanger our global stability to shield themselves behind abstractions of international law which they themselves routinely violate. '
You mean the UN whose efforts you sabotaged at every turn, allowing your zionist colony to bomb, murder, assassinate and exclude from any meaningful programme of assistance for the Palestinians? And that last sentence, wow, the unbelievable nerve of this guy, and the complete lack of self-awareness, considering that this has been the US empire's modus operandum ever since the concept of international law was first developed.
Whatever, it's a function of power to make you swallow absurd lies and poisonous fictions and threaten punishment if you don't pretend to enjoy it and ask for more.
We do not need to abandon the system of international cooperation we authored...
Even if you accept that they authored it, they then proceeded to completely ignore it.
we don’t need to dismantle the global institutions of the old order that together we built. But these must be reformed. These must be rebuilt.
They don't need dismantling but need rebuilding? What does he think happens before the latter? His speech writer needs a kick in the bollocks, as does he really.
He's gone from being a bit of a joke to being the smooth politician lurking in the background of the administration, ready to jump into the big chair once it's open. He's a fucking snake and it feels like he's being groomed (cough) to take over when Donny scumbag is retired or expired.
The endless ability for these whores to spout complete garbage, black is white, upside down, meaningless words but believe every one is a sure sign of sociopaths. He's horrific. The corporate media are complicit in the Gaza genocide. Never forget what they did. Never forgive them for it.

I expect the real power interests would be happy to have him as their figurehead, especially if they've decided that naked force is the way they're going to do things now. I was reminded of Pinter: 'You see this fist? This is my moral authority, and don't you forget it' - except when he said that it wasn't nearly so brazen and out in the open, Dubya notwithstanding.

Probably. The camera pans out around 22:15 when they're giving him the standing ovation. Can't see their faces, though dressed like the usual well-to-do summit-hopping freaks.Tell your story; Ask a question; Interpret generously http://storybythethroat.wordpress.com/tell-ask-listen/

re: the ecstatic audience reaction, I was thinking throughout: these are the people that blew up the nordstream pipeline and then tried to get european countries to foot the bill for their arms manufacturers to arm Ukraine (in theory - in practice probably going straight on the black market or left for the Russians to blow up to claim back on the insurance or whatever-the-f* scam they're pulling nowadays in one of the world's most corrupt countries). They're cheering their own continued satrapy and exploitation by the global hegemon - although it won't be them who suffer, but the people they supposedly represent. Time to bring the guillotines out of storage... metaphorically!
Finally got to read Rubio's speech in Munich: it is one of the most revisionist and imperialist speeches I've ever seen a senior American official make, and that's saying something.
The man literally laments the outcome of WW2 because it marked the end of the era during which "the West had been expanding", a "path" he "hopes [the US and Europe] walk together again."
And just to ensure you're clear about what he means: he wants to restore the building of "vast empires extending across the globe" and blames "anti-colonial uprisings" for what they did to "the great Western empires."
He also says that "we cannot continue" to allow "abstractions of international law" get in the way of US interests.
Basically the man is openly saying that the whole post-colonial order was a mistake and he's calling on Europe to share the spoils of building a new one.
Which is quite a pitch for an American to make given that their own country itself was born from revolt against European colonialism, but I guess expecting the Trump administration to understand their own history is too tall an order...
The most troubling part was the reaction of the audience: "half the hall in Munich gave US Secretary of State Marco Rubio a standing ovation" (chathamhouse.org/2026/02/wes…) and I'm pretty sure it wasn't the Global South half...
It just goes to show the complete absence of reflection in Europe. Rubio undoubtedly tried to appeal to some sort of latent nostalgia for Western imperial dominance among European elites. And it obviously worked (which is scary in and of itself).
But it also shows that Europeans remain naive to the extreme if they believe Rubio's pitch that he wants Europe to be strong in order to share the spoils of a new age of Western imperialism.
What's the thinking here? That Trump's America - "America first" - would suddenly become magnanimous and share with Europe just out of sentiment? That's not how imperialism works: the whole premise of it is that the strong dominate the weak.
When an imperial power is speaking to you of sentiments, of how much they like you and how they want to partner with you - the much weaker party - that's cause for worry, not applause...
🅰pocalypsis 🅰pocalypseos 🇷🇺 🇨🇳 🅉 @apocalypseos Rubio’s speech was a schizophrenic symphony of cultural pessimism: a critique of the “End of History” liberal internationalism wrapped in the very “Clash of Civilizations” barbed wire that keeps humanity divided—the very worldview Rubio claims to reject but merely inverts.
The “Clash of Civilizations” and the “End of History” are twin heads of the same oligarchical snake. Rubio is counterfeit opposition, offering the mirror image of the disease while posing as the cure. He is a man trapped in someone else’s argument, incapable of imagining a future beyond the categories the oligarchy gave him.
By framing the future as a contest between the West and the rest, he ensures the conflict that will block the grand-scale infrastructure and scientific cooperation needed to lift the entire planet.
His insistence that the engine of development must be a narrowly defined, ethnocentric “Western civilization” ignores a simple fact: a shrinking, aging population is the death knell of a physical economy. Who will staff the factories of the new “Western supply chain”? He ignores the demographic problem because he’s focused on culture war, not economics—and that makes him a useful idiot for the oligarchy. He never mentions moving beyond a speculative, finance-driven economy to a productive one. This is the Malthusian madness of the very Club of Rome he claims to reject, dressed up in patriotic clothing. Rubio peddles the same zero-growth poison as the globalists.
Humanity’s destiny is discovery, not nostalgia, but Rubio cannot see past the barbed wire. For him, there is no room for the creative intellect that transcends tribe, no recognition that the scientific method or musical genius knows no border. For Rubio, “the West” is a tribe to be guarded, not a mission to be advanced.Tell your story; Ask a question; Interpret generously http://storybythethroat.wordpress.com/tell-ask-listen/
It had Miller's White supremacist fingerprints all over it
or whoever is behind him. It's shocking that the whore-stream media have not gone a lot harder on this speech because it's not like the deranged, racist, imperial message is subtle, or hidden.
DD did a more critical analysis of this garbage in a 15 minute segment than the entire corporate media put together. Ridiculous times. The corporate media are complicit in the Gaza genocide. Never forget what they did. Never forgive them for it.
