That interview was a highlight. It ranks with her epic confrontation with Jeffrey Archer in 1995 (he ended up shouting at her, "I was
WARNED about you!" and a memorable icy dismantling live on air of her glib and voluble radio colleague Jim Mora, who deserved everything that excruciating half hour of purgatory. And she has a special place in my affections because she actually read out live on air a couple of my emails to her and did not treat them with her trademark disdain. But even then she could not help springing to the defence of Bill Clinton after I'd commented adversely on the old monster.
[1] So she can be very good.
She can also be terrible; I was most appalled by her when she casually, ignorantly, expressed contempt for New Zealand's greatest poet.
[2] She's retired from her weekly show now, but still does the occasional feature. Her latest venture on Radio NZ is called
Kim Hill Wants to Know; last week she interviewed, in a tone of solemn awe, that old fool Richard Dawkins. Another old codger she interviewed in the series was that angwy lisping psychopath Fwank Gardner.
