In '23, do the Vikes go desperation move?
Trade up & grab the next Christian Ponder. In a year where there's 2 pretty good qb's & a slew of projects. Then 2024 rolls around with 3-5 QB prospects. And the Vikings have already chosen their guy... And somebody pretty good ( Russel Wilson) slides off the board in round 2 or 3 that the Vikings ignore. BC they have their project in hand.
No doubt about it. Bryce Young &/or CJ stroud would be a worthy pick if the Vikings were in position to grab either. The Vikes are NOT.
That leaves a slew of 2nd tier qb's.
All of them with lots of warts.
Levis, Richardson, Hooker and about 5 or 6 others... Any of em could be the next rusty Wilson or? the next... Andy Dalton, Blaine Gabbert, Mitch Trubuaky....
In 2024...there's Spencer Rattler, Bo Nix, Caleb Williams and another 3ish guys with at least will Levis upside.
Hence. My "common sense approach"... In 2023. With pick #210. The Vikings should draft the best next tier QB, with? Best upside?/ most efficient? Of the 2023 2nd tier qb's. That might be McCall? O'Conner? It might be hooker or The Stanford or NC st QB?
Sure, fine. Grab a QB the next 10 after the 1st 2 go off the board are the same guy... In that- used correctly, to their strength. Maybe you find the next russ Wilson. Personally. I see a lot of backups. Not bc these kids can't. No. But because teams/ coaches are stubborn. They're aren't many Andy Reid's. Willing to ditch their 10 year scheme & design a new one that fits qb-"x"'s skill set. Why would they go out on a limb for a project?
I do like Levis's time line better than Richardsons. But Richardson's upside trumps Levis's timeline ..mmmm, but- kevin O'Connell is still learning to chew gum as he walks. So? McCall & Aiden O'Connor make more sense. They are scheme fits even if of lower talent. They fit his "scheme". 5 step drop, play action, w-motion confusion. It'll take most of these spread qb's 3-4 years to just get the read progression down. And KOC isn't flipping his scheme to a spread RPO for Will Levis or Hendon Hooker. He just finally became a HC. Think about it🤔
I still think- whomever the Vikes draft at QB in 23 will never start & succeed in Minnesota.
No coach hits gold with a late round QB out of his year 2 draft... So? Give Kevin a toy. A guinea pig. With only 5 pux in the draft. Don't toss any of the early picks into this certain trashcan of wishful thinking. Please.
Instead? Force Kevin to adapt. Next year, circa 2024. With a 2nd ball of clay and use that all in mentality on Caleb Williams. If hes on the team? it's a no brainier how to use him😁🤣🤣🤣
