I watched that wake/ NC game in 2021.
Wanted to watch Sam Howell vs Sam Hartman.
A lot of hype on the game with draft gurus gushing about Sam Howell. Myself, I had fallen in love with the Wake Forest offense & the deep pass RPO they were running with Sam Hartman.
Ty Chandler stole the show. I came away less than impressed with Howell & the Hype machine and more believing it was Chandler that made NC's offense tick. Defenses began loading up to stop Chandler & his acceleration through the second level. Howells stat line should have expload. It didn't materialize.I was beyond happy when we drafted Chandler.
2 weeks ago in Green Bay. He showed that acceleration, returning the kickoff for a called back TD. Ivan Pace flagged for phantom hold.
That's about the only glimpse we've seen of Chandlers ability. But Vol & Tar Heel fans know the kid is a 1 cut + a wiggle & gone type back.
As I stated back then. He runs a bit high through the line. The same knock they tagged Marcus Allen & Derek Henry in draft grades. I'm not saying he's Marcus Allen. But the kid has talent. Maybe it's the high pads that have delayed his NFL RB career? Or maybe it's something else?
Whatever the reason. The Vikes have been reticent to put him on the field sans kick returns.
With Josh Dobbs/ Jaren Hall at QB? Ty Chandler in the backfield. It would seem a no brainer to install some RPO in place of some of the play action.
Load up to stop Dobbs, Chandler breaks it up the middle, load up to stop Chandler, Dobbs pulls it in & sprints wide. With the receivers the Vikings have. I would think opposing lbers/ safeties would be in for a very long day. But that's not the KOC scheme- as we know it. The skill players to run RPO are now starters. Including Nwengwu who lacks the runners vision/ instinct to be a pro set bell cow. As an RPO read the LBer RB? Nwengwu's speed could possibly finally be an offensive asset.
KOC preaches to his players- adapt & overcome adversity. Will the coach adapt & overcome?
I hope so.
Dobbs graduated from Tennessee in 2016. Ty Chandler was a Vol Freshman in 2017. It's quite possible the 2 met? On a recruit visit to Knoxville?https://utsports.com/sports/football/roster/joshua-dobbs/963
With the background.... It would make for a nice future story if the 2 - almost creamsickle teammates- pulled it together & became purple & gold stardom.
I hope they both go GIGANTICO
There's a shit ton of non traditional talent amongst the 3 names mentioned above It's up to KOC to harness it into a scheme that utilizes all of that speed.
You can bet Kevin sees it. Knows it. And will have a month- or 3- of insomnia trying to configure it.
Probably my favorite all time cliche/ saying =
Necessity is the mother of invention.
Well, it's necessary kev. Get to inventing!
