Possibly, some kevie quotes in the link do offer some insight? Or it could be misdirection. It doesnt feel that way but w/o full context of quotes, its hard to know for sure.
Quote 1- " I want to be an extension of the quarterback development in our building,” O’Connell said. “I want to play a major role in that because it’s something that I love more than anything.”
Quote 2- "We’re not going to leave anything to chance,” O’Connell said. “That’s my philosophy on it, and I’m excited about finishing the process with our guys.”
Meaning- quote 1- Oconnell is betting his Viking future in the upcoming draft.
Quote 2- "They will be moving up should the guy they want be available, if the prearranged trade partners slot arrive with said qb still available.
My take from this? If youre betting your nfl fiture on 1 player. Would it be on a qb (McCarthy) that possesses 9" hands? Or a qb with multiple knee/shoulder (Penix) injuries?
I think not. I think the target is either Maye or Nix. A good coach believes that he can coach up a young player. Fix processing limitations or technique flaws in young players. Physical limitations however, can only be minimized. An arthritic knee doesnt improve over time. 9" hands rarely grow. However. The qb, with plenty of arm strength. Can be coached to trust downfield throws(nix). The young qb(maye) asked in college to read only half the field. Have a chance to expand their field of vision over time.
To be fair to Michael Penix jr. Multiple news services reported the same thing from the combine. The qb's passed his medical exam & prognosis hints at no long term issues.
And on JJ McCarthy- Joe Burrow & Jarred Goff have 9.0 hands.
The true final word on a young qb's future success comes down to 2 factors. The prospects personal dedication to improving/ conquering his craft. The supporting cast & coaching continuity they are drafted to play in.
Im going to add in 1 more opinion.
Of the 6 top prospects. Quite possibly the most nfl ready guy is? Williams? Daniels? Nix? Penix?
Arguments can be made for all 4. Nix in his present form- to my eye- played in a system closest to what the Vikings did with Kirko. Lots of screens, short throws/checkdowns populated with occasional downfield throws.
Interesting to me. The vikings are most often heard discussing McCarthy & Maye. I stand by my belief- the guy teams dont mention, almost seem to snub. Are most often the actual target. Use secretive contact akin to national security classified info to conduct final interviews.
Nix pro day was march 12-
Paste-
" if they are heavily interested in Bo Nix, they didn’t show it on Tuesday, when he performed in Eugene at Oregon’s scheduled pro day. In fact, they didn’t really show up at all. That’s right. No KOC, no Kwesi and no Josh McCown, who was just hired as QB coach a couple of weeks ago."
IMO- for Oconnell- Bo Nix is the pick.
