Garrapolo, drew brees are goid examples of finally landing in a spot with a good supporting roster & getting a reset- youre the guy- leading to success.
It also fit the narrative of how the vikings found their most successful qb's, Tarkenton, Moon, RC, cousins to name a few. Especially the 1st 3 I mentioned. Highly rated college qb's that for whatever reason- never got a shot with a good team until they landed in minnesota.
It also confirms my thoughts concerning Florios statement to start your young qb right out of the gate. The ones that did so with success, either landed in a pretty good spot, or were no brainer talented- like burroughs, Rothleisberger or this year-caleb.
The vast majority of these rookie qb's- contrary to florios - start em week 1- just are not ready to run an nfl offense, or read nfl defenses. Rspecially Maye & JJ who have started 25-30 games above the HS level.
Caleb & Nix are probably the only 2, maybe Rattler, with enough football IQ & high level experience that a wise coach would even consider starting week 1. Furthermore, starting midseason, when they didnt get the lions share of 1st team reps through preseason and minicamps seems to be the worst of all available options.
If the vikings do draft a qb. The vikings wind up with 4 qb's. Darnold needs as many reps as are available so he's as knowledgeable to start the year as possible. Mullins &/or Hall need reps. Mullins to remain engaged, Hall to continue developing? Or do they dump 1, split second reps with the FNG. Can Hall be slid to practice squad? Possibly, but its not fair to the kid if he has hopes of ever being a legit player- even as a legit backup.
Mullins on the ither hand- I think proved he's the best backup the vikes have had in a very long time. The Brett Favre record breaker proved hes willing to sling it- & to some decent success. If he had favres arm talent- he'd be a coveted starter. The guy absolutely IS a savy vet whose mind can play the game. Its just the noidle attached to his right shoulder that betrays his chance at success. Tbh, Id extend Mullins for multiple years. He's 29, and his aggresive mindset playing the position is exactly who you want mentoring your young qb's. Ge & Darnold both are willing to put it up for wr's to make a play. Young qb's rooks- tend to come in gun shy. Not understanding they will rarely see the wide open looks they built their college success with.
I could see, a young qb that understands hes got a lot to learn. Benefitting much as 3rd string vehind Darnold- an aggressive reputation passer- & Mullins a flat out favre-ly gunslinger. I dont think Jaren Hall adds anything to a drafted qb's curve on this team. & Im not sure Hall has the playing style to benefit from what this staff & qb room can teach.
You know who fits in that room like a glove...
Its former auburn Gun slinger turned Duck check fown master Bo Nix.
Nix is the pick. He just turned 24 in february.
2 years behind Darnold & Mullins. Some mop up duty reps in year 2, maybe taking over at midseason year 2 if Darnold fails to become the star I think he'll be in minnesota. Hopefully, Denver leap frogs the vikes to the chargers & draft JJ, Penix or Maye & the raiders will leap frog for the other. Leaving Nix & Rattler as the last 2 draftable qb's that arent full on projects.
And- lol- Nix could never win the big game in college. If that doesnt scream Viking qb. Nothing does🫣
