While non-galvanised steel wall ties may shows signs of surface rust, this is one of the cons foisted on house buyers by mortgage providers - write into the mortgage offer that it is subject to a "survey" for "wall tie corrosion" with their nominated "specilalist", who will inevitabley find "signs of corrosion" & recommend that they install "remedial ties". This requirement is then written into the mortgage offer & the would-be buyer then comes after the house seller to cover the cost.
Been there, been scammed. At least we didn't get the "roof felt" survey forced upon us as well when we sold a 1929 built house. The house was originally built with a back pointed roof - the "survey" (had it been insisted on) would have noted no roof felt fitted & the mortgage provider would then have insisted upon the perfectly servicable roof having to be removed to fit roofing felt underneath. We go the wall tie scam, but not the roofing felt scam - other houses down the same street had the roofing felt but not the wall ties or, in the case of other unfortunates, both.
