    Hardy, if you have a copy of my book Casting About the Surf. Have a look at the baits pictured on pages 48 and 122. These are perfect gurnard baits on the beaches (shallow sand mainly) where I fish. The floatation doesn't seem to affect results as I always get my share of fish when they are around. I mentioned a while ago watching gurnard swimming around on the surface in twenty feet of water at the Napier aquarium. Since then I have never worried about fishing off the bottom. Floating the baits gives them more movement too which I consider very important for gurnard. A bit of flash also seems to fire them up so sequins go on the trace too.
