Thanks for all the replies and I appreciate the advice. I agree that having the car for as long as I did has complicated the issue but my feeling is that I still have no responsiblility for the big end knock.
I have since received a letter from customer stating much the same and demanding full repair of engine and refund (if missfire still there).
I have also taken legal advice from the Federation of Small Businesses who stated that as long as I am confident that nothing I have done could have caused fault than do not offer any refund whatsoever.
I have written back confirming that I will not be carrying out any further repairs to their vehicle untill the engine is repaired and that I will not be refunding any money until that time.
