Dealing with your problem customer I would argue that you carried out your duty of care by checking that the previous service had been carried out at the 5 year interval and quite rightly assumed they had warned or discussed the matter of the timing belt with the customer. Also it comes down to the same old argument has the owner of the vehicle read the owners handbook and taken heed of the manufacturers instructions! You need to argue that any one taking charge of a sophisticated car is required these days according to the highway code to understand the requirements of a modern motor vehicle. I have just recently had the pleasure of getting both my children through their driving tests. I recomend you get hold of a Renault Handbook and a up to date Highway code. I hope this Guy runs up a large legal bill and you trounce him. If you are a member of the RMI they have a free Legal service. I also will contribute towards your legal costs if it gets complicated.
