We fitted a genuine vauxhall cambelt kit and waterpump to a Vectra B 1800cc 16 valve 18 months ago at 30k on the speedo.The owner asked us to fix an exhaust heatshield rattle which was an obvious water pump rattle 10k later.On removing the belt both idlers were noisey and with appreciable lateral movement in the bearings.The owner had a lucky escape but who would have been at fault in his mind if the "exhaust" rattle had resulted in engine repairs costing more than the value of the vehicle?The belt replacement was to the manufacturers specification as was their reply on warranty, 12 months 12 thousand miles.
