4 gas or not 4 gas that is the questionArchived Message

So last week I composed a 40 question quiz for my local gliding club with questions ranging from principles of flight, air law, navigation, instruments and pressure settings, human performance, etc etc etc. I also put some general knowledge questions in too.
One was name 4 of the common gases that come out of a petrol driven vehicleÂ’s exhaust system. Simple enough I though if youÂ’re into gases, hard if youÂ’re not.
When giving out the answers I didnÂ’t bank on two boffins from the local university who were well versed in gases. They named several gases some of which IÂ’ve never measured but are present.
They said no no no Hydro Carbons are not a gas. So I asked well what are they? I/we think they are a mixture of gases and carbon but are not a pure exhaust gas. Hmmm this sounds reasonable! I waved the question and gave everyone a point to make my life easier. I still haven't found a definitive answer but as far as I can see Hydro carbons are a mixture of unburned fuel and other gases.......
So your four gas analyser isnÂ’t a four gas itÂ’s a three gas and a particle counter.
