I understand the need to curtail emissions, but it seems costs fall predominately on those who can least afford. Why not move to ban vehicles with large engine capacities, you know like the posh Range Rover Keith Starver loves running people over with, pushed for a fully integrated transport system that actually services small towns and hospitals - is Lucas aware most UK high streets in towns and villages no longer exist, what about chemists, or banks or a plethora off other places one must visit weekly/monthly in order to survive.
Case in point, I was only able to attend Cardiff Uni and live at the folks house, some 20 miles away because we had a dedicated bus service that run directly to Cardiff via our small town, last year that service stopped after more than 50 years. I'd not mind, but the last bus out of Cardiff was at 6.20pm to where I resided.
Indeed, Wales largest teaching hospital is in cardiff, so, from my neck of the woods one must take three different buses to get to the hospital. Or, the hospital my 86 year old father utilises for his knackered knees is some 12 miles away with no viable bus service whatsoever - obviously they could use a Taxi, but at huge cost - a 24 mile return journey don't come cheap.
Its great for the middle class that reside in metropolitan cities with a University and functioning public transport to instruct the already stressed poor to pay more without any consideration of the reality.
I'm happy flying green credentials but not at the cost of penalising the poor who run old cars usually with an engine below 1500 cc. Ban bloody gas guzzlers and invest massively in public transport, which, yes you've got it, would mean taxing the rich and professional managerial class a lot bloody more, which neither duopoly Party will do.
