.@esa: "Italy, Spain, France, Germany and Poland are all facing a major heatwave with temperatures expected to climb to 48°C on the islands of Sicily and Sardinia – potentially the hottest temperatures ever recorded in Europe." esa.int/Applications/Observi… #Cerberus

Not sure if this is ground temperatures but please stop with that. Perhaps air temps will break a record and it’s definitely made more likely by climate change. The ground temp thing is just silly.

    ESA @esa
Ground temp. Weather forecasters use predicted air temperatures, but this satellite instrument measures the real amount of energy radiating from Earth – and depicts the temp. of the land surface. Therefore, the map shows the actual temp. of the land’s surface, significantly hotter than air temps.

Scientists monitor land surface temp. to better understand and forecast weather and climate patterns as well as monitor fires. These measurements are also particularly important for farmers (for irrigation) or city authorities for example.

    BBC Weather @bbcweather
On this day last year, the UK experienced its hottest day on record, with 40.3C being recorded at Coningsby.
A staggering 46 weather stations exceeded the previous record of 38.7C. 🌡️

Thats because the @esa have started testing the ground temp rather than the standard 2 meters above ground level that they normally would. More lies!!🙈🌡☀️🌞

    ESA @esa
By 'test', we think you mean 'report', and we don't report air temperature. We report 'land' and 'sea' surface temps. BBC report air temp. Information on land surface temp. is a key parameter for studying Earth. Long-term trends in surface temp. are an indicator of climate change, see esa.int/Applications/Observi…

Thank you for the response. Have been looking for info on this. So is it then the news outlets who have started using your method of "report" instead of the tried and tested way they have used in the past? Im interested to know?

    ESA @esa
No, they have not changed. They are reporting higher 'air' temps. All temperatures, land or air, on average have shown an increase.

    ESA Earth Observation @ESA_EO
Moreover... we get the LAND surface temperature from satellites flying in space - we don't 'test" it ourselves.
This works by using an instrument called radiometer, aboard the @copernicusEU #Sentinel3 mission. Here's a technical recap of the instrument: sentinels.copernicus.eu/web/…
