GB News "logic" is hard to refute Archived Message

I tune in now and then to the rabidly right-wing GB News (Farage is one of its presenters, Portillo another) which is always banging on about "fake" climate scares. The other day they had a live discussion about net zero with various "experts" who obviously agree with their position, and one of them said -- I'm paraphrasing -- "Makes very little difference what we do here in the UK because our CO2 emissions are only 1 per cent of the world total whereas China emits 40 per cent CO2 [it was round about this figure, I can't remember exactly] and India is very much higher than us, as is the US." To me this is a very powerful and persuasive argument that many people will agree with. No matter how hard we try in the UK and Europe in general to reduce our carbon footprint, unless China and these others major polluters make strenuous efforts to reduce theirs we are quite literally pissing into the wind. Maybe, but there's something seriously wrong with anyone now today who pretends to themselves that global warming isn't the most serious insult on all our societies including the "workers" he's always going on about. One can still fully endorse this sentiment and at the same time feel powerless and impotent in making a positive change, or any change, when we are such a minor player on a global scale. Little wonder that some folk shrug and say, Whatever I choose to do will have no effect whatsoever, so I'm carrying on as normal. This logic is hard to refute.
