I never complained about height. I could care less if we start 6’8 at center. Basketball doesn’t need a 7ft back to basket post like 25 years ago. There are only so many bigs like the Purdue guy who are game changers and not a liability on the perimeter.
Doesn’t mean size isn’t an asset. A truly dominant Big west post like Williams at UCSB. He was undersized height wise, but was burly and moved well and was an actual post player. Irvine guys have been complementary to their system.
Did he try? Too busy recruiting 5'5 point guards.
But remember it was just a few years ago when most of us were complaining that CDM could not get good sized big men here...
