BW, Big SKY and WCC should merge and make 1 big conference with a rotating scheduling. That's the only way I see them surviving. With no football revenue it's going to get difficult to make money.
I don’t know the exact timing, but it’s getting pretty hard to see Long Beach, and most of the current Big West, being part of Division 1 athletics in 5-10 years….perhaps less. I’m sure the NCAA realizes their best strategy in MBB is to still have representation beyond the Power Conference / Football playing segment , that’s like 50 schools, but they don’t need 300 schools playing David to their Goliath, they can generate the hype / excitement they need with about 100. Putting aside the Long Beach bias, I’m also watching what happens to the remaining WCC without Gonzaga. They have some strong programs but, as we saw when Vegas left the BW, programs can quickly deflate when the Deathstar leaves.
Something is telling me that the Big West will change sooner rather than later. I am not sure how.
Because Hawaii has football they are a logical fit for the MW. The MW is desperate to get another FB shool so I suppose they will make Hawaii a good deal. I wonder if the PAC12 will actually offer Sac State as they also need a FB school. If the BW goes down to 10 teams I say leave it that way unless we add Sac State and San Jose State which is unlikely.
+ Extra Points’ Matt Brown and Action Network’s Brett McMurphy report the Mountain West and Hawaii are in discussions about the Rainbow Warriors becoming full MWC members. Brown adding: “One of the big unanswered questions in these discussions centers around Hawaii's travel subsidy obligations, and whether they can make the math work for everybody. Hawaii pays a travel subsidy in the Big West. As we wrote this month, Hawaii's late night TV slot seen as a potential asset in future league TV deals, not a drawback (thanks gambling!).”
This would not hurt men's vball but the ladies would play in a lower field than in the BW.
