Bob Maxson loved the athletic program and understood its marketing and branding value to the overall reputation of the University. We don't need an Athletics first President, we need someone who understands its role at the University in terms of national reputation, attraction of quality students, faculty and staff and fundraising.
We can't compete in terms of NIL, but we also don't have football, which means we can concentrate any NIL efforts on Basketball and a few chosen marquee Olympic sports (volleyball, baseball and mayby one or two more.
Since we can't buy our athletes, we need to create an environment that makes them want to come here and stay because they feel appreciated, wanted and have room to grow. Bob Maxson understood that, and that was the key element of his leadership.
In order to do that, we need to focus on scholarship fundraising because those go directly to the students to support their athletic and academic careers, are tax deductible to donors and fit in with the Long Beach mentality of working hard, fighting through adversity and showing grit and resiliency.
I cannot tell you how much it irks me that Smitheran puts out the slogan "Long Beach Built" and continually brings in people from San Diego State. We should have that slogan on banners with pictures of Misty May, Jared Weaver, Lucious Harris, etc. etc. etc.

NN, this was just an invention of your own?
If so, it created a conversation regarding what type of leadership and direction some of us board regulars would like for LB State. The consensus appears to be a "Bob Maxson type". I think that going with an "athletics first" type of leader would be folly in the day of NIL - the school simply isn't competitive, however I want the next president to have pride in and to pursue excellence and staff retention for athletics, in the face of the most challenging environment ever faced for LB State athletics. Bring in and try to keep excellent, successful coaches, and if they leave for NIL $$, so be it. To borrow from Mike Tomlin: Next "man" up. Previous Message
Nothing on her leaving for LBSU as just a joke on how everyone from SDSU is being chosen by our AD to run things. Previous Message
I am wondering though why she would be interested in making the move, currently SDSU is a better job, it is clearly the flagship of the CSU system right now both athletically and academically. Previous Message
I agree on De La Torre Previous Message
The current President of San Diego State was a faculty member at Long Beach when Bob Maxson became President. She's very familiar with his style of leadership.
She has done a good job at San Diego so far imo. Unlike Jane, she didn't cave to the pressure from students to change the school mascot, and kept it as the Aztecs. Previous Message
