I tried to grab from what people consider left and right media, as well as the budget of the state itself.
State shows revenues rebounded, but in reality it pulled billions from the reserve fund to make it look better, called it revenue.
CSU/UC raise questions I understand, as it appears to be some discrepancy on what a fully funded budget means. Correct me if I'm misunderstanding, but the raise was dependent on being fully funded, and unions say using the no interest loan is fully funded, and admins saying a loan does not count?
It appears the CSU budget has been running a deficit for the last three years or so, pretty consistent through the campuses, used reserves. Can't find a good article explaining/analyzing the causes in detail.
But the UC's have it easier, as budgets/spending funds can come directly from the governors office/discretion, where CSU's most often have to go through the CSU board which is controled by legislative spending.
Our athletic spending used to be bolstered by the President's office back in Vic/King days. Those days are long gone. The overall budget situation will impact athletics, and I hope we can survive the NCAA transition and keep competitive sports.

The second article describes the current situation best. Opinion pieces not so much. Of course, some difficulties need strong attention.
We still are the fourth largest economy in the world, just had a huge fire emergency, and I think an earthquake might happen. Article 2 describes what the CSU and UC systems are experiencing. Staff were promised raises.

What facts do you base these comments on?
"The state needs to make better decisions with how it handles its bureaucracy.
Too much spending on programs that are not essential. The state was fine limiting what essential workers are, but won't consider what is actual essential spending."

This is the second year of reduced budgets from the state. Most workers are somewhat unaware of the financial crisis and go about their daily work. Some places have hiring freezes. No mass exodus of staff and faculty. Where would they go? It takes 4 years of working to become an employee, and many staff get let go at 3.5 years. CSULB and SDSU are the two major places that hire the most temporary employees. The environment for staff could be considered dreadful. We were promised raises in our last CBA negotiations, no the chancellor's office doesn't want to follow through as they think there is a way for them to claim that the CSU did not receive a complete budget, and they want to provide a $144M interest-free loan. So the CO doesn't want Steps or raises for staff. Same for 26-27 as the state reduces its contributions to the CSU and UC systems. Most staff and faculty are trying to survive. With such higher prices for everything and no raises, we are not in a space for professional development or growth. Luckily, CSULB keeps getting more students overall.

You claim to be an "insider" at LB. What's the general atmosphere in the face of the budget cuts? Is it hopeful or dreadful? How bad are they going to be and what is going to be affected? Is there a staff/professor exodus? Will the cuts be visible to those who are not intimately involved with the campus community? What is the outlook looking forward to 26-27, or is this currently a case of just trying to get by this year first and we'll worry about next year later?

While that's inexpensive entertainment, will it be worth your time?

UCSD lost their head coach from last season to UNM (Albuquerque - ugh!).

With what UCSD accomplished last year with their rag tag division 2 transfer players, I would have thought everyone would be excited with our team. This groups has to be better than last year. I am not sure we even won a game in 2025. Let’s wait and see what happens.
