Unhappy Cat Update (long)

Well, yesterday I decided that maybe she'd like some catnip - I'm a dog person but heard cats like it so I went to the pet store and bought both a catnip toy as well as a laser mouse. I figured we could try playing together.

I entered the home and she was close-by. I showed her the catnip toy, she smelled it for a couple seconds and grabbed it with her mouth and ran into the living room. She's rolling around and I thought that was the magic bullet but it only seemed to make her more wild and want to lunge at me.

I wanted to change her catbox in the bathroom so I went in to do so, shutting the door. When I came out she was rolling around - like wanting a belly rub and meowing but then she stood up and was blocking my path from leaving I kid you not folks. I had the laser mouse and used it to distract her and was able to leave by doing so. I also took the catnip toy as the package said not to leave unattended.

My friend remains in the hospital - Stage 4 lung cancer - bedridden. Can't even move in bed without his O2 going down. Constant O2 being given. He told me yesterday when I saw him: "I'm frightened and I want to hold my cat again. I miss my cat so much"

I asked him if one of his kids could put her in a carrier and bring him in to see her he told me "She'd never stand for that. It's bad enough wen I have to take her to the vet"

I'd think someone in the fam would get his cat and take her to their home. It's not 2-1/2 weeks the cat has been alone - I do not see it daily as wife also does - cat has ample food and water and I left her treats she likes as well.

I feel this is not good all the way around #$%^^#@!

Definitely spayed - I remember my friend telling me that - he took her in at the same time she had some shots. His kids found her as a kitten, underneath a car at a junk yard when my friend was looking for a part for a classic car.

you are doing your very best with the situation that has been presented to you. The poor cat is wondering what happened to her usual life and some cats just don't respond well. I think the idea of a short video of his cat for you friend may be a very good idea.

You were on the right track but catnip does make some cats more aggressive. She probably fell asleep right after you left though!

It does sound like she is scared and maybe a bit protective of her territory. I would suggest a taking a toy like Da Bird or something with a long stick and feather type that you can get her to chase. If she likes the laser pointer, she will probably chase something she can grab. Mine only go so long with the dot until they want to actually catch something.

Also, with the feeding part, are you giving any canned food and if not, will they let you? You can feed canned close to you, so she can get used to you more and associate you as the person that gives her good things. As stated before, the more you can just sit and let her come to you, the better. Make sure you are relaxed and maybe read a book or watch tv and don't pay attention to her. She should, if not come around, at least not attack you when you try to leave.

One last thing, maybe a short video of her playing would lift her owner's spirits. If you have a smart phone or maybe he has one you could try that. She definitely wouldn't be herself if taken to the hospital.

Thank you VERY much for suggestions. I printed out a good photo that I took of her on high-quality photo paper and framed it. Saw him today and gave it to him.

His response? "MY KITTY!" (and yes, tears)

So sad yet made his day! I hope kitty calms....ms

It was a kind thought to bring cat nip, but it usually only exasperates how the cat feels....a happy kitty more relaxed, a nervous or mad kitty more aggravated. But you meant well, sorry it didn't work out.

Personally I do not recommend taking that cat to the hospital, it would be even more scared and mad and lash out. Would not be good.

Seems like the man loves it, could the cat be being abused when his wife comes? Or is its personality just like that all the time. I can see why they wouldn't want it if it was. Could be dangerous to their other pets or kids. Strange it acts this way though. Something had to have happened to it. It's probably afraid and it lashes out rather than run away.

I don't know how much time you have to give it, but maybe sit in a chair, turn on the tv, use the laser light occasionally, keep treats with you that you can offer it and give her one now and then if she comes near. Talk gently and let her come to you first. This is going to take some time but she may come around with patience. Of course all the good you do may just be wiped out if the wife does differently when she comes. This will take consistency and a lot of time.

Maybe take a pic in your phone and print it for the man to see his cat. He'll be happy for that.

I don't know what else to say.. sad situation but I hope something gets better.
