Tyson is ten-months-old and was diagnosed with CF when he was 4 mo. (his 2nd hospitalization.) He has struggled with both respiratory and growth/ digestive issues. When he was diagnosed, they put an NG-tube (feeding tube) in his nose to help him “catch-up”. Because of some of his respiratory issues, and probably stress, my milk supply was cut in half, and we had to start him on some predigested formula—the only thing he could keep down. Long story short, his appetite went down from there until, after 5 months on the NG-tube, we finally got a G-tube (“Button”) placed in his tummy (just a few weeks ago). Respiratory-wise he has struggled most of the summer—mostly with coughing & congestion, not so much in his sinuses. The CF clinic keeps putting him on oral-antibiotics which always improves his state while he is on the antibiotics, but within a few days he’s back to coughing etc… almost as bad as before (maybe with a little improvement). A month or so ago his lung function FEV1 (I think?) was 88% (Low for his age). A few weeks ago he got a bronchoscopy which showed a lot of mucus… He’s been culturing Staph in his throat and lungs. So here we are right now. Less than a week ago he finished yet another string of oral-antibiotics, and as usual, his cough is back. Breathing treatments are night & morning, and include xophenex (or albuterol), pulmizyme (which I’m not too thrilled about—it gives him a rash), CPT, and Flowvent. Right now I don’t think twice a day is enough—he coughs quite a bit when evening approaches, and during the treatment, and several times this week he has coughed for several hours shortly after midnight. He again coughs during the morning treatment. Often he coughs so much it causes him to throw-up. His weight is off the charts. I thought by now (after the G-tube) I’d begin to see a difference in his weight, but he just seems to be getting thinner & thinner. I’m putting about 30 ounces of pregestimil in him per day (including his night drip), and he’s currently getting 2 ultrase capsules per feeding. I’m thinking of uping his dose to see if that will make a difference. He also comfort nurses but he probably only gets 2-4 ounces per day. We just started giving oral GSH-curc caps to Tyson two days ago. I’ve been a little hesitant in starting GSH-- especially inhaled—because of Tyson’s delicate health, and the rough start Dr Bishop described in his protocal (“possible slight agravation of asthma symptoms for first 7-10 days”). It’s simply a timing issue. On the other hand, what we’ve been doing has not been working, so if this will really make a difference in the long run, we are very anxious to do it. We are anxious to stop (as much as possible) using anti-biotics, and do everything we can to build Tyson’s immune system. I realize I also need to rebuild his gut with probiotics. I am open to any suggestions… I spite of it all, Tyson is a very happy boy, out to explore the world. And he loves playing with his older brother and 2 sisters. [I wrote this note a few days ago... Update: Tyson's coughing seems to at least not be getting worse, but he keeps losing weight, and now his energy is going down... Help!] Thank you,
I’ve been studying about glutathione etc… for a few months now. I have read a lot on this forum, and am grateful for the shared knowledge & experiences. I wonder if anyone has any suggestions for our situation:
Tami
