The research on GI absorption of GSH is really in its infancy. All the studies I know of look at absorption either immediately or, tops, over 3 days of observation. However, unpublished absorption studies looking at longer periods (like 90 days) shows that the jejunal receptors for GSH are upregulated over time, resulting in higher rates of absorption the longer you use GSH. Further, GSH can also improve conditions right there in the gut, regardless of rate of absorption, cleaving mucus and reducing gut inflammation. In the most recent NACFC abstracts, weight gain is noticed in CF mice fed NAC or GSH.
Dr. Bishop's recommended dosages are based on an educated speculation: that the deficit of extracellular GSH in a CF person's body can be rectified by exogenously supplying half of a normal body's daily production. The new Italian trial should help us understand more about the effect of oral GSH.
