Dylan recorded the music live in the studio with his band. “We knew these songs extremely well. It was all done live,” he said. “Maybe one or two takes. No overdubbing.
AKA: "I wanted to put out a new album and I didn't feel like putting in any effort this time around. I already knew these songs so I didn't have to learn them. and I was too lazy to think of any arrangements ideas so I didn't bother with overdubs."
“I don’t see myself as covering these songs in any way,” he added. “They’ve been covered enough. Buried, as a matter a fact. What me and my band are basically doing is uncovering them. Lifting them out of the grave and bringing them into the light of day.”
So he admits that these songs are totally played out to the point that they're practically buried. But he did 'em anyway.
The album will ultimately be decent, because the original songs are good. But I can't imagine any situation where this becomes the kind of album that most people will want to listen to more than a couple times.
