That they "invented the genre." The Byrds were a rock band playing country music - that's a somewhat interesting premise, but there's very little country-rock to be found on it, and even if there was, how were Buffalo Springfield not "country-rock"? I think even Johnny Cash could make a claim for that title. The Byrds, in 1969? Not a chance.
That's just a claim that has always baffled me.
