After he wrecked his voice Dennis Wilson became the most distinctive and characteristic and most emotionally resonant vocalist off the group and imo became the best singer of the group due to that.
Is there any other examples where the vocalist made their mark after destroying their voice
The only example I can think of that remotely approach that is Dylan Time Out Of Mind album where he used his wrecked vocals to great affect however I can't say I rate that voice higher than his 60's era period where Dylan had a surprisingly large vocal range and an awresome projective voice
