I think the timing of record's release had something to do with the hype. Putting aside Blackstar's connection with Bowie's death, I still think it's a solid record. One of his best, probably, probably not, but it's still a pretty good album that holds on its own merits.

As for you saying The Next Day is better, I've actually been thinking of picking that up and some of the stuff from his final phase like Heathen and Reality.
